1. Data We Collect

PenIt AI collects only what is necessary to provide its core features:

  • Voice audio — Recorded locally on your device when you tap the record button. Temporarily saved as a compressed audio file (.m4a) and immediately deleted after transcription.
  • Text transcripts — Generated from your voice recording. Sent securely over HTTPS to our backend for AI analysis, then deleted from our servers after processing.
  • Notes — Your titles, summaries, quizzes and flashcards are stored locally on your device only using SwiftData. We never upload your notes to any server.
  • Usage count — A simple counter stored locally on your device to manage the free recording limit. Never sent to any server.
  • Privacy consent — A boolean value stored locally indicating you have accepted this policy.

2. Data We Do NOT Collect

  • We do not collect your name, email, or any account information
  • We do not store audio recordings on any server
  • We do not store your notes or transcripts on any server
  • We do not use cookies or tracking technologies
  • We do not sell your data to any third party
  • We do not serve ads or share data with advertisers

3. Third-Party Services

  • OpenAI Whisper API (OpenAI, LLC) — Your compressed audio file is sent to OpenAI's Whisper API for highly accurate speech-to-text transcription. OpenAI does not use API data to train models and deletes audio after transcription per their API data usage policy at openai.com/policies/api-data-usage-policies.
  • Google Gemini AI (Google LLC) — Your text transcript is sent to Google Gemini AI to generate summaries, quiz questions, and flashcards. Google processes this data per their Privacy Policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
  • Google Cloud Run — Our backend server is hosted on Google Cloud Run in the US-Central region. All data is transmitted over HTTPS and deleted immediately after processing. No data is stored on our backend.
  • Apple StoreKit — All subscription purchases are processed entirely by Apple. We never receive or handle your payment information.

4. How Your Data Flows

  • 🎙️ While recording — Audio is saved temporarily on your device only
  • ⏹️ After stopping — Audio file sent to OpenAI Whisper → transcript returned → audio file deleted immediately
  • 🤖 AI analysis — Transcript sent to Google Gemini → summary, quiz, flashcards returned → transcript deleted from our server
  • 💾 Saved locally — Your note (title, summary, transcript, quiz, flashcards) saved on your iPhone only
  • 🗑️ Nothing persists — No audio or transcript remains on any server after processing

5. Data Storage & Retention

  • On your device (permanent) — Notes, settings, usage count stored in iPhone app sandbox
  • OpenAI servers (temporary) — Audio retained only during transcription processing, deleted per OpenAI policy
  • Google servers (temporary) — Transcript retained only during AI analysis, deleted per Google policy
  • Our servers (none) — We do not store any user data after processing is complete

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for marketing or advertising purposes. Data is only shared with OpenAI and Google as described above, solely to provide the app's core transcription and AI features.

7. Children's Privacy

PenIt AI is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, please contact us at [email protected].

8. Your Rights

  • Delete all notes at any time within the app
  • Revoke microphone and speech recognition permissions in iPhone Settings → Privacy
  • Cancel your subscription anytime via Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions
  • Request deletion of any data we may hold by emailing [email protected]

9. Security

All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS. Audio files are compressed and transmitted securely. We follow industry best practices to protect your data during transit.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via an in-app notice. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Only the text transcript is sent (over HTTPS) to Google Gemini AI to generate your study content. We do not sell your data or store your notes on our servers. All notes are saved locally on your device.
Every new user gets 3 free recordings with full AI analysis — no credit card required. After that, you can upgrade to a monthly ($4.99/mo) or yearly ($49.99/yr) plan for unlimited recordings.
Absolutely. You can cancel at any time with no penalties. Go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone and cancel from there. You'll keep access until the end of your current billing period.
PenIt AI uses OpenAI Whisper — one of the most accurate speech-to-text engines available, delivering up to 99% accuracy across different environments, accents, and speaking speeds. It performs exceptionally well in lecture halls, online classes, and quiet study rooms alike.
Partially. The live transcription uses Apple's Speech Recognition which may require an internet connection for best accuracy. However, the AI analysis (summaries, quizzes, flashcards) requires an active internet connection to reach our backend. Your saved notes are always accessible offline.
Currently PenIt AI supports English only. We are actively working on adding support for French, Spanish, and Mandarin in a future update. Stay tuned!
Yes! Premium subscribers can export any note as a PDF and share it via AirDrop, email, or any app on your iPhone. The PDF includes your AI summary and transcript, perfectly formatted.
